The last several months have been trying, to say the least. Our home has been invaided by mold, then by the men working to remove and repair the mold. Insurance denied our claim, leaving us gut-punched with an estimated $57,000 bill. We spent 4-weeks on the couch and 6-weeks with no shower.
Through it all, however, Evan and I have had each other (though we didn’t realize the “worse” part of “for better or worse” would come so soon), and even when our house is falling apart and we feel beat up from every angle, I still feel like the luckiest girl in the world. The best man at our wedding described my husband perfectly: “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives Evan lemons, he squeezes them in his eye to make you laugh.”
And laugh we’ve done. We laughed when I stood naked in our kitchen while Evan used the kichen sink hose to spray me down. We laughed when 3 nights in a row Evan awoke to me kicking him in the head while sleeping on the L-shaped couch. We laughed when both of us, plus Liza, found ourselves tangled in hair dryer cords and shaving cream while trying to get ready in the tiny half bath one morning. Evan’s self-deprecating humor keeps me going, and I like to think my unintentially moments of embarrassment keep him going, too.
I can write this post with high spirits because we think the dry wall dust is finally settling. Walls are up and being painted, floors go down next week and all the details are ready to fall into place. Remediation costs came in less than we excpeced and insurance is reconsidering our claim. A small sigh of relief is forming.
Stay tuned for before and after shots of the spaces. We can’t wait to find something new to laugh about when this is all said and done!
